Driver Selection
I had heard good things from the Alpair 10P and the published response plots showed a remarkable capability to provide excellent off axis performance in
the top octaves. I obtained a couple of samples, and liked what I heard. Wanting to offload much of the excursion requirements onto a similarly sized woofer,
I searched the available candidates. I had specific parameters in mind. The driver had to be paper to better integrate with the sound of the Alpair I wanted
an 8 ohm driver of similar sensitivity so when paralleled, would provide an additional 6 dB for baffle step. I wanted at least 40 Hz for an f3, and I wanted all
this in a reasonably sized enclosure. -Well I came close, and the enclosure looks quite slim and unimposing -from the front. The good news is it does not
have any spacing requirements between it and the front wall.
My search led me to the SB Acoustics SB17NRXC35-8-UC Uncoated Cone midwoofer. This is a very well appointed and excellent sounding driver, provides
excellent bass extension, low distortion, and is a nicely integrated with the Alpair.
